Second Generation of Crestron Connected® Technology Enhances Control, Monitoring, and Management of Third-Party Devices

June 29. 2021 - Crestron's ever-popular IP-enabled device control protocol, Crestron Connected, has been around for over 16 years and has been adopted by dozens of manufacturers. In fact, collectively, there are more than a million Crestron control-enabled devices.

First generation Crestron Connected has been very popular. But, as with any technology, newer security standards, as well as the requirement to control the latest features of many device types, require even the most proven technology to be updated. This ensures it remains fully operational and scalable and can grow with the client’s evolving needs.

First gen Crestron Connected needed to be updated to meet our high security standards and include facilities for secured and encrypted connections. It needed to support our Crestron Fusion® Cloud and XiO Cloud® monitoring and management platforms. It needed to support our Virtual Control server-based control system. It still used Adobe® Flash® software, since discontinued. And it was limited in its ability to control unique features of third-party devices, beyond standard features.

Here’s why we’re excited to release second generation Crestron Connected® software

Crestron Connected now delivers even more robust control of third-party devices, including displays, projectors, AVRs, and power supplies and conditioners. It also includes the added benefit of compatibility with the XiO Cloud® platform to remotely monitor and manage those devices. Here’s what else you get:

  • A new, API-based protocol proven to offer faster responses between devices and the room control system, as well as more device feedback relative to specific statuses
  • Backwards compatibility with first gen Crestron Connected devices
  • Support for TLS and authenticated connections for enhanced security
  • Compatibility with RoomView® software and Crestron Fusion, Crestron Fusion Cloud, and XiO Cloud platforms
  • Fully compatible with existing and new Crestron control systems, as well as our enterprise-grade, server-based control system, Virtual Control
  • No longer requires Adobe Flash
  • Programming interfaces expanded to include capability reports, so a programmer can query a device for what features are included vs. not included
  • Optional device features are now advertised to the control system program to give clients more choices of what to control and monitor
  • Built on a new API “join” technology, which makes it much simpler for manufacturers to incorporate into their device firmware

How to know the third-party devices you’re purchasing support Crestron Connected

Easy! Just look for the Crestron Connected logo on the device and/or product manual. Or simply ask the manufacturer, dealer, or integrator.

As always, our sole focus is customer satisfaction. We remain committed to ensuring the investments you make in Crestron include support for devices from the industry’s leading manufacturers for a seamless integration and control experience.
